I was in LA this weekend and went to check out the Red Bull GRC race. I’m a big Ken Block fan and his weekend wasn’t all that great but man Bucky Lasek was fast. Unfortunately he was not as fast as the VW’s. Scott Speed and Tanner Foust were on point all weekend. I don’t mean to detract from their driving but the VW’s worked so much better off the corners than their competition which kept over heating and blistering the right rear tire.

Bucky made the final on Saturday but had car trouble leaving the track after the final heat and the team wasn’t able to repair it in time which sucked, but that’s racing. I also loved seeing four Subaru’s entered in the race. I think the larger WRX’s are too big for rallycross and they should have built AWD BRZ’s but that’s not my call. I put together a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with amazing pictures from the incredibly talented Larry Chen for those that missed the race or broadcast.

I missed Sunday but it was a lot like Saturday. VW wins again. A !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! can be also be found on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for those looking for more pics and results.

I took a break after racing at the Nurburgring last year which was my dream since I first got into cars. Somehow I started in my mom’s garage and raced at WRC Mexico, Pikes Peak, Targa Newfoundland, the Baja 1000, The Mint 400, and a bunch of other rallies and wheel to wheel races. It seemed like it was time to figure out what I want to do next!

I still race here and there for fun like the AER race at Lime rock last year. Im racing at Mid-Ohio in a few weeks and am debating taking the Baja Pig back to the 1000 this November. I also want to run my 325ix rally car at Snow Drift in November. And I’m spec’ing out a new 318ti rally car with an LS Motor and Baja style suspension. It should be pretty aggressive but I have too many projects to finish first.

Im definitely not a journalist. Those guys went to school and have real skills. Im more an automotive adventure guy that likes to tell stories. But I have been publishing stuff since I first went to the Goodwood Festival Of Speed with Ken Block in 2011. I love writing. I just hate manufacturer news and car reviews. I love automotive adventure stories and motorsport so I most write about that. Its why I started Build Race Party. I wanted a place for people to be able to publish their own adventures with cars. Nothing beats Jalopnik btw, this is more a side project of mine because I wanted it.

Does it pay the bills? It sounds fun, but difficult at the same time.

I don’t really have any bills... a cell phone registration and insurance on 3 or 4 cars. some storage facilities for my cars. The key to living a free life is to reduce your minimum drag so you're free to travel and have fun. My biggest expense is entry fees and race tires.

Where do you live? As in, do you own a house, do you rent?

I live everywhere. I haven’t had my own place in 18 months. I closed down my shop in San Diego and split my time between San Diego, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Hampshire and Maine. Im currently in San Diego. In a town called Cardiff By The Sea. My friend has an awesome house across the street from the ocean and I keep my Scout, X5, and Baja Pig here. I keep an E30 in maine and a 318ti in Berlin - It used to live at the Nurburgring but my friends totaled their car and asked to borrow it. I am thinking about making Los Angeles a more permanent location for me but time will tell.

I had my own place for 20 years. It was time for a change and its been a ton of fun. But I think if I had to work all day at the same cubicle 50-70hrs a week(or more like I used to) it would be really tough to not have one place with all my stuff. Because I only had a few hours to relax and enjoy it before sleep and the cube again. Plus when you commute back and forth every day its nice to have your own place to keep everything organized. But when you start traveling a lot, having a home just becomes something you need to deal with on the road. And you have to pay for that home you’re never in.

So the “homeless” thing might sound bad to some its a pretty awesome way to live. Plus Im not garageless and its pretty nice to have my cars in the cities I visit. Like recently I’ve been spending more time in chicago again so I just bought a 2006 comp package M3 this weekend which I can also use for track days next summer.
